Cycle disorders and hormones

A disrupted cycle often has a hormonal cause. These are the ones we see most often:

• An underactive thyroid frequently leads to cycle disorders in women.
• A malfunction of the pituitary gland disturbs the control of the ovaries.
• If the ovaries are not stimulated, ovulation does not take place.
• Being underweight or overweight limits fertility. Underweight can stop ovulation, while overweight often comes with cycle disorders.

We investigate this with hormone analyses from your blood and with cycle monitoring by vaginal ultrasound.

Endometriosis

In endometriosis, tissue similar to the lining of the uterus occurs elsewhere in the abdominal cavity: on the ovaries, fallopian tubes, bowel, bladder or the inner lining of the abdomen. Typical symptoms are severe menstrual pain, pain during intercourse and pain when passing stool or urine.

Endometriosis can only be diagnosed reliably by laparoscopy. We perform this procedure.

Repeated miscarriages

From the third miscarriage onwards, this is referred to as recurrent pregnancy loss, and it needs to be investigated. We examine the possible causes and discuss the next steps with you.

• Cycle monitoring by vaginal ultrasound
• Hysteroscopy (examination of the uterine cavity)
• Laparoscopy (examination of the abdominal cavity)
• Testing whether the fallopian tubes are open
• Investigations after repeated miscarriages

We go through the results together with you and decide on the next steps jointly.

Freezing eggs for later

With social freezing, we freeze unfertilised eggs so that they are preserved. This is an option if you do not want a child at present for professional or personal reasons but would like to keep the possibility open.

Several eggs are matured through hormonal stimulation. We retrieve them under light anaesthesia and freeze them at very low temperatures using vitrification.
